Pros and Cons of “Low-Profile” Landscape Design (Minimalism, Sustainable Materials) vs. Traditional Greenery
Hey everyone! I’ve been thinking about redoing my backyard next spring and can’t decide if I should go for a simple, low-maintenance design or stick to a more classic green layout. I saw some really nice minimalist yards around Duncan that use gravel, native plants, and wooden accents — they look super clean and modern. But I’m not sure if they end up feeling too “bare” after a while. Has anyone tried that kind of setup? I’d love to hear how it holds up over the seasons, especially with all the rain we get here.

I went minimalist a couple of years ago, and honestly, I don’t regret it. Less mowing, fewer weeds, and the native plants handle the wet seasons really well. The trick is to add a few textures — like stones, driftwood, or even small shrubs — so it doesn’t look too plain. I found some great local pros through Landscapers in Duncan, BC who really understood how to work with our coastal climate. The setup looks modern but still feels warm and inviting.
